For those who work or aspire to work in the outdoors, the Wilderness First Responder is the industry standard for professional guides, trip leaders, search and rescue team members and outdoor wilderness travelers.

Our Wilderness First Responder course is for you that work or recreate in an outdoor setting where access to medical care is delayed or communication is unreliable. 

Delve into the essential principles of wilderness medicine, learning how to perform a comprehensive physical examination, gather critical patient history, and evaluate vital signs – crucial elements of proficient wilderness medical care. You'll acquire the prowess to administer emergency treatments, manage musculoskeletal injuries, and navigate the intricacies of medical evacuations. This WFR course is designed to empower you with the experience and practical skills required to stay calm and responsive in disaster relief and medical emergency scenarios.

Curriculum

Our WFR curriculum is meticulously crafted to foster an in-depth understanding of medical intervention in outdoor scenarios. Spanning a duration of 80 hours, this Wilderness First Responder course offers you a dynamic blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on practical skills development. You will receive in-depth wilderness-based experiential education that goes beyond conventional medical training, targeting those moments when immediate medical care is hampered by distance or unreliable communication. 

Upon successful completion of our course, you'll not only earn a prestigious WFR certification but also garner the confidence to tackle medical emergencies in remote environments, make critical evacuation decisions, and offer reassurance and guidance when it's needed most. 

Course Approval

This course is recognized by the American Camp Association to meet specific ACA standards requiring certifications. The course meets the Wilderness First Aid course and is approved by the United States Coast Guard to meet the first aid and CPR training requirements for a merchant mariner credential.

This course is pre-approved for 70 hours of EMT Continuing Education Hours by the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE).

This course has been approved for Fellowship of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine (FAWM) credits through the Wilderness Medical Society

Academic Credit (USA)
This course is approved for 3 college credits through the University of Utah and 3 college credits through Western Colorado University.


Testing

Along with continuous evaluation and feedback from your instructors throughout the course, each student will be required to pass both a written and practical exam on the last day of the course. The practical exam will require students to demonstrate the skills they have learned throughout the course and the written exam will be multiple choice. Your instructors can provide more info on testing procedures on the first day of your course if needed.

Successful course completion will earn the following certifications: 

  • 80 hours Wilderness First Responder

  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

  • Epinephrine Auto-Injector

With backgrounds ranging from veterans of the U.S. Navy to National Park Service Rangers, outdoor educators, flight nurses, and more, they bring real and deep experiences to teaching the recognition, treatment, and prevention of wilderness emergencies.

Immersive Medicine Curriculum

Developed by NOLS staff who are industry experts and experienced practitioners, our curriculum is field tested by our expedition instructors and informed by decades of injury and illness data. These help us prepare students to respond to the most likely incidents that happen in the wilderness.

Develop Risk Management Skills

These courses approach risk assessment and mitigation from a patient-focused, wilderness medicine perspective. You will learn to recognize potential medical complications, make informed decisions, and prioritize patient wellbeing. Through hands-on scenarios and practical exercises, students not only develop proficiency in wilderness medicine but also gain the ability to adeptly manage medical risks in various environments. This preparation equips you with the competence and confidence to navigate the unpredictable medical challenges posed by remote wilderness settings.
